Back in Lysoysund

On the 19th of July 2014 we left Haroysund after a rocky start to the adventure and pulled in to the Veternbathavn in Lysoysund, this was our fist Norwegian stop under our own power. Yesterday evening we once again arrived in Lysoysund, this time with numerous stops between Haroysund and the Veternbathavn. A different way of travelling, both for the slow speeds but also without the same rush to reach the Arctic circle.
Off out on a fishing trip

Scenery around Garten area

Low and flat land compared to much of the Norwegian coast

We had spent the night in Garten and just after midday we had followed the ferry out of port and slowly made our way out past the shallows. The area like all of Norway is well marked with recommended routes and bouyage helping you navigate the many rocks and shallow areas. In the distance we could see kjeungskjaer lighthouse, at an average of 4 knots things in the distance stay there for a long time!!
Kjeungskjear lighthouse is a quirky octagonal lighthouse built on a skerry at the entrance to Bjungfjorden.
Kjeungskjear Lighthouse

The building itself was built in 1880 and inhabited until it was automated in 1987, now that would have been isolated!  As we approached the lighthouse we decided to go closer for a look, at around 4knots we are the slowest boat in the sea, very quickly everything from sailboats to fishingboats catch up with us. Yesterday though as we approached Kjeungskjaer lighthouse it was something a bit larger closing in on us, the Hurtigruten! We dashed in behind the lighthouse and watched the huge passenger ship race by at around 15knots. As seems to always be the case we stand in amazement how close the large ships get to the land, skerries etc and places that seem worrying to navigate with out draught doesn't seem to phase them!
As the Hurtigruten approached she sounded her horn for the amusement of several people who were getting a tour of the lighthouse.
Chased by the Hurtigruten, I know who will win!

We carried on north following the Hurtigrutens path and deciding to be slightly braver with our navigating we headed through some of the shallower tighter routes which also are quicker. Just as we were approaching one of these areas, squeezed between two rocks a Norwegian Coastguard RIB came speeding past us, causing quite a wake! Carrying on though we returned to familiar scenery as we approached Lysoysund, hard to believe its been almost 2 years since we were here last we tied up in a similar spot to last time.
A friendly chap noticed our boat and came along to speak, a few hours later as we were walking by a summerhouse he called us over and very kindly gave us some freshly caught and filleted Coleyfish! We look forward to enjoying it today, he certainly made a better job of filleting than we have so far, we need to be taught by someone!
One of the many huge ships which sent out massive wakes!

Again as we have found through our entire trip people have been very friendly and welcoming. Its lovely to be back in Lysoysund, last time we left here we headed for the Arctic Circle in one go, this time, at this speed with around 240miles yet to go we will have many many stops before we reach it!
Lovely evening in Lysoysund
Clouds reflected in the still sea
Today we are completing a few jobs aboard and then going to explore a little in the area. Its a hot sunny day and we're very lucky!
